Be heard | Plan B Survey | Business Survey

In December 2011 Hay Chamber of Commerce carried out a survey of its members. Some of the results of this survey are below.

Business concerns: 89% of businesses who replied1 said they were concerned about the development of a new supermarket/retail park being built on the existing school site. 84% were concerned that it would directly affect their trade

Loss of turnover: Research shows that the arrival of a large food store to a small town results in a drop in turnover of between 20% and 75% for specialist retailers locally.2 If this is the case, then 98% of traders in Hay would be in serious trouble. When asked what percentage of turnover they could afford to lose, 25% said they couldn't afford any drop at all whilst 79% would be put out of business by a 20% fall.

1 Of the 120 businesses canvassed, we had 85 responses
